January 2/2005: The site of the city of Columbus:

(Columbus, Montana, that is.) This is a fairly hilly site on the edge of the Great Plains. Lewis and Clark stopped here on their return trip in the summer of 1806, to make 2 "canoes" (out of cottonwood trees). I chose it mainly because it is at the junction of rivers (Yellowstone River is the big one, the Stillwater River is the one coming from the south, and Keyser Creek, the one coming from the north.) I also chose it because the 3 trees in the current version of my "god-mode" flora brush, (Cottonwood, Ponderosa Pine, and Douglas Fir) are 3 trees native to the area. (See links below to download trees, terrain textures, and even maps of the terrain itself.) Everything in the following scenes is contained in the textures/trees/mod files available below, except the water color. Cottonwood trees lining a small slough and river bar.

Looking West at some hills along a creek. The trees were placed with the Columbus "Standard" flora brush, which places trees mainly on north-facing slopes and in draws.

Some deer in Ponderosa Pines. The trees here were placed with the Columbus "Dry" flora brush, which spaces the trees further apart, and only places them in certain restricted areas. ("Wet" spots.)

Dense Douglas fir forest. These were placed using the Columbus "Wetter" flora brush, at a higher elevation.

Also at higher elevations in steep terrain, you will get some scree slopes. Here, some grizzly bears rummage around in the beargrass at the edge of a scree slope.

In mountainous terrain (i.e. at very high elevations): These trees were placed with the Columbus "Dry" brush

This is the north slope of a mountain ridge. The trees were placed with the Columbus "Wetter" flora brush. There is no "treeline" with the Columbus brushes, and the Columbus terrain stays gren no matter how high you go (except cliffs and scree slopes) so it's not good if you're looking for rocky, snow-covered mountains.

The following is optional. It contains maps and mods for generating the actual Columbus terrain topography. Because of the weird way I did it, it's more complicated and time-consuming than a normal grayscale import, (but produces a much more detailed result.) All in all, it's probably not worth the effort unless you really like the topography of the region.

If you download this version and later download an updated version (hopefully will be available in a few weeks but who knows) you will need to undergo a seek-and-destroy mission to get rid of some of these files, as the new ones and old ones won't be compatible. (Although any trees you place with this version should still work under the new version).
